The Shipping Forecast is a located in Liverpool city centre and offers good pub food until 10 pm daily. Only a little way from The St John's multi story car park, which will only set you back £2.50 after hours- expect a reasonable night out if you choose to visit.
With exposed bricks, wooden floors, shelves filled with wirelesses and dim caged lighting, this venue is the essence of retro-urban decor. After a day of shopping this is a great place to unwind in a booth at the back with some good value grub and a pint or glass of your favourite beverage.
We were greeted by Mike who had kept a table for us in the back and told us to order at the bar.
The pub attracted a lot of students while we were there and with the Tuesday 2-4-1 offer on burgers it was easy to understand why. Mike informed us that they had had a hectic Easter weekend and that week nights are generally as busy as we encountered- clearly this is a popular haunt with young people living in the city.
For starters we ordered the Nachos- Corn ships with melted cheddar, burnt end chilli, guacamole, salsa, sour crème and jalapenos. Light and creamy with a kick of spice, this is the starter to have if you want to enlighten those taste buds before your mains.
I opted for the Chips and dips- Fries with sour cream, BBQ sauce and garlic mayo dips- for the more indecisive dipper- this offered three different flavours to jazz up your fries as one sauce can get a little boring! I must warn you we took the 'snank and share' title a little too liberally- and encourage you to have just one item off this section as the portions are very generous indeed- sadly rendering us too full for dessert. Seeing this picture makes me sad :(
The Pulled pork and smoke chipolata jam burger brought two tasty meats together in one glazed brioche bun with tomato, lettuce, mayo and fries- all served in basket for that quick fix, casual dining experience.
The Roasted squash and baby gem sales- with roast cherry tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and chilli jam dressing was surprisingly spicy and came served in an enamel deep pan. Just what I needed after my carby starter and an ideal summer dish for us vegetarians. However, if you do have the room and are not a meat eater, there are plenty of burger options to fill you up.
From ribs, to southern fried chicken, hot dogs and burgers- all the good pub food is there in abundance with many different variations on the burgers for those who like to experiment with their toppings and sides. In addition you can drop in for coffee if your time is limited or for a 'roast to shame your mother' on Sunday- a bold statement so worth a visit to find out if it lives up to its name!
A pub with a friendly atmosphere, faithful regulars and food that won't break the bank- The Shipping Forecast is a relaxed dining experience that will make you leave full, satisfied and ready for a food induced nap.
