- Add crisps to your sandwich. If you do this already (it's a growing trend, after all), try mixing it up with a different flavour or add tortilla chips instead. If its an added crunch you want, why not try adding some cornflakes? Remember, no rules!
- Get sauced up. Add a different sauce such as piri piri or Worcester sauce. You could even combine sauces such as Dijon mustard and horseradish. In a variety of sandwich classics, freestyle moves such as these really add a burst of tasty spontaneity to lunch.
- Get fruity. Squeeze a lemon or lime over your sandwich filling or simply add the zest. This makes for a dynamic, zingy and surprising contrast to savoury fillings. And remember, the aim is to mix things up.
- Leave your comfort zone. If a cheese sandwich is your thing, then try shaking things up with an interesting alternative. Try blue cheese, feta, mozzarella or Emmental to indulge in new tastes and give your sandwich a revamp.
- Bread choice. Buy a variety of breads: walnut, granary, seeded rolls, bagels, fresh focaccia, rustic baguettes, sourdough, raisin and rye… The choices are endless when you choose to freestyle - so get experimenting!
WHY IT'S GOOD TO 'FREESTYLE'
"This research demonstrates that the repetition of eating the same food every day can provide reassurance and stability. However humans have the innate desire for exploration and we would benefit from shaking things up.
"New tastes and experiences can excite and motivate us, especially as we have a far greater selection of foods to experiment with than we've ever had before. After all, classic sandwich fillings like cheese, ham and chicken can now be enjoyed in so many different ways.
"It can be a positive move to recombine, reimagine and reinvent our meals. It isn't always necessary to introduce new foods - you can freestyle by using a new combination of well-known ingredients to refresh and reinvigorate your palate."
