Almost one in four of those surveyed said their earliest memory was having the bird for Christmas dinner, and almost a fifth said they most remembered enjoying hot fish and chips by the seaside. One in ten said that they clearly remembered school dinners, whether positively or otherwise.
The report, which was commissioned by cheese and bacon producer Denhay Farms, also found that people's earliest memory of learning to cook was licking the mixture out of the bowl.
The survey also rubbished the idea that family meals are becoming less frequent, with almost half of Brits revealing that they still insist on sitting together at the dinner table as a family, and one in five said that they refuse to have the TV to be on while they eat.
Anyone worrying about planning a wedding should relax - as the poll found that only 2% of us actually remember it.
Psychologist Dr. Jane McCartney explains, “The association between smell, taste and emotion is what triggers our memories, therefore it makes sense that food plays a big part in our most prominent memories.”
