He's left a legacy in cricket that'll never be forgotten and now hosts on talkSPORT radio, but what many people don't know about Darren Gough is that he's a huge fan of wine. Bringing that passion together with he and his wife's love for the charity Care for Wild - a brilliant rhino sanctuary which protects the animals from poachers and other threats by rehabilitating orphaned rhinos before releasing them back into the wild - the sporting icon has now launched a collection of seven wines from which sales will benefit the Care for Wild cause.
Three whites, three reds and a rosé make up the collection, with each of the wines priced between £7 and £25 individually. The charming bottles feature Gough's signature along with the distinct Care for Wild rhino logo and, most importantly, up to 20% of profit from each of those sold will be donated to the charity.
Gough commented: “Protecting the critically endangered rhinos is a great passion of mine. Care for Wild do outstanding work and to be able to help raise awareness and money for such an incredible cause is an honour. The partnership with Freixenet Copestick is perfect, because not only are they strong in the UK but their parent company, Henkell Freixenet, will also help with global distribution. Additionally, I have done a lot of work with Robin Copestick [Freixenet Copestick, Managing Director] on the quality of the wines as well as ensuring that they are competitively priced. I am an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to wine but I know what I like and I am sure the UK consumer will love these wines too!”
Petronel Nieuwoudt, Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary NPC Founder added: “I truly believe that through the sale of Care for Wild Wine Collection, we have a unique opportunity to bring the important message of rhino conservation into households across the UK, and the fact that Freixenet Copestick were also supportive in ensuring the whole range was sourced from world-class South African wineries brings me much pride and joy”.
The Care For Wild wine collection is available now from www.slurp.co.uk, after which a launch is planned with major UK grocery and On Trade chains.
Female First thinks:
After trying out each of the wines, we've got to say that they are some of the tastiest on the market! No matter your favourites, there's going to be something for you in this collection.
The Sauvignon Blanc is sweet and goes down very well with some spicy dishes; while the Chenin Blanc is a more earthy taste that would go well with fresh vegetable dishes.
For those who may believe the myth that rosé is the wine for people who can't make up their minds, this could be the one that changes their opinion for good. It's a delicious pale pink offering, that's refreshing from the first mouthful and delivers red berries and citrus fruit notes.
Over with the reds, the Red Blend of Pinotage and Shiraz creates a well-balanced wine, created with ripe fruits and delivering a soft, velvety finish. It's a great accompaniment to red meats, chicken and Indian dishes.
