National Chip Week!

National Chip Week!

It’s National Chip Week so we talk to owner of FoodCraft in Winsford, Cheshire, John Finney Jr about the importance of this beloved and quintessentially English take out treat!

Why are fish and chips so important to British culture?

Fish and chips is the national dish of Britain. It has very much become part of our heritage due to its popularity over the last 150 years. Fish and chips have earned its place in the hearts of the population in recent history for a number of reasons. Way back in the 1860s it was one of the original fast foods which in a very short time became easily accessible to the majority of the population. Fish and Chips sustained morale of the population of Britain through two world Wars. It was not rationed during the Second World War as it was viewed as a valuable commodity, not just for the nutrition, but also for morale. Churchill himself called Fish and Chips “the good companions.” Fish and chips and chip shops have become part of our history due to the love of this simple yet delicious dish.

What are you doing at FoodCraft to celebrate fish and chips week?

FoodCraft are celebrating National Chip Week by hosting our own chip shop version of a Lucky Dip, “The Chip Dip”! Customers can drop in and try their luck to win a portion of their chips for FREE! And they can enter as many times as they want during the week!

Why is something like chip week so important to businesses such as yours?

National Chip Week helps to increase awareness and focuses much needed attention onto our industry. It gets people thinking about chips and what a wonderfully inexpensive treat they are!

What sort of images can be conjured up when you eat fish and chips?

People have many fond memories of Fish and Chips, from trips to the seaside to family holidays, and as a warm welcome treat on a cold winter’s night. We think of holding that crumpled paper in our hands and dipping in with the smell of salt and vinegar wafting up our nose. Little wooden fork is optional!

Why do you think that the combination has lasted through the generations?

That’s simple. Fish and Chips complement each other perfectly - delicious, nutritious simplicity! Fish and Chips are natural foods prepared and cooked whilst you wait. Ideal with mushy peas and a dash of tartare sauce!

What strange dishes can be found at FoodCraft for the fried chocolate bar lovers?

Alas, there has never been much demand at FoodCraft for any kind of fried chocolate. Savoury seems to be the popular choice in this area!

What should people look for and prioritise when they are looking for a good chippy to frequent?

Well, obviously clean premises and presentable, friendly staff are always a good start. The new Food Hygiene Ratings Certificate should also be clearly visible in the window. Many shops serve Cod or Haddock or sometimes Plaice, but never be afraid to ask if unsure. We also encourage people to as us if they want a fish cooked to order for instance with very little batter or extra crispy. It’s always good from a customer’s point of view to be able to see the food being prepared and cooked, A few minutes wait always guarantees hot, tasty food.

What is unique about you?

Over the years, there have been many things we have learned to do well here at FoodCraft. One thing that does make us fairly unique is our freshly baked, home-made pies, made from scratch on the premises. Our meaty gravy is also a firm favourite. We use real meet stock from when we cook our steak pie filling which gives it a real meaty taste!
