One In Three Brits Secretly ‘Re-Gifts’ Wine

With just a few days to go until Christmas day, chances are you’ll be heading to a party tonight armed with a bottle of wine for your host.

But will it be specially bought or a last minute, random selection from the cupboard? It’s likely to be the latter, as new research by Sainsbury’s reveals that one in three of us will be ‘secret re-gifters’ this Christmas, with wine coming top of the list followed by chocolate and perfume.

When it comes to wine it seems that we trust the judgement of friends and family more than our own and will happily pass off their gift choices as ours.

The research shows that when 're-gifting', a third of us pick a bottle that looks expensive - rather than select it for its grape, vintage or origin - in order to impress our hosts.

Brits also lack confidence when it comes to selecting wine and, as a result, tend to splash out, often spending up to 40 percent more on wine for gifts than we do on wine for ourselves.

When choosing a bottle as a present we tend to stick to the traditional wine countries with 27% of us opting for France, 15% turning to Italy and 10% heading to Spain.

There can be trouble down the track though with 2.4 million of us accidentally giving someone a bottle of wine that they originally gave to us.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, "Brits re-gift as it’s an opportunity to pass off wine that we are unfamiliar with but it’s also a great way for those looking to pick something that looks impressive.

"Our advice when you are buying wine as a gift is to get something that you’ve tried and liked before - if you are going to be spending a bit more than normal then it probably isn’t the time to start experimenting.

"France is often a good bet because of its heritage; its wines are perceived as a bit special."
