Michael McIntyre would certainly cause some laughs round the table

Michael McIntyre is the funny-man that you all want to invite round for dinner - but chances are you won't be cooking him a three course meal.

Research shows that sitting and eating a three-course meal is a thing of the past nowadays, with more and more people preferring to spend their social time acting casual and inviting friends around for barbecues.

Only two per cent of Brits stated that having friends round for a meal of fine dining is their preferred choice of entertaining.

It also found that 50 per cent voted for a laugh at the dinner table, as the comedian is the person who you would like to have round. Followed by Jamie Olvier - no doubt to do the cooking - then Cheryl Cole, she's bound to spill the dirt on Ashley, David Beckham and then Pippa Middleton. Is that really a wise choice though? I mean, seeing that bum in the flesh may just put you off eating, forever.

The study, carried out by Carte D'Or shows that almost a quarter of people spend less than 15 minutes in the kitchen when entertaining friends, while 50 per cent of them admit to passing off a shop-bought dessert as one of their own.

These findings have lead Carte D'Or to team up with top chef Jean Christophe Novelli to help you make the most of those special eating moments by using great ingredients to make simple dessert classics in minutes - perfect for you to spend more time with your friends.

Jean Christophe Novelli says: "It's pleasing to see that British cooks are so confident when entertaining friends and family, however I'm not surprised that desserts make so many people nervous. People need to remember that desserts really don't need to be complicated and by using great base ingredients like Carte D'Or, it's easy to create something to make social eating occasions really special."

The tradition of sitting around the table as a family appears to be a fading formality with less than half saying they sit around the table when eating.

One in 10 Brits say they never sit down as a family and over a third claim that they eat their main meal in front of the TV instead.
