The concept of a 'superfood' is frequently overused, with the tag being slapped onto many foods, without there being any definition of what makes it so super.
The term 'superfood' is unscientific, and is generally disregarded as a marketing tool by health professionals and dietitians, as there is no official definition and many products defined thus also have negative health implications. Of course, any food consumed in high quantities will not be good for you.
However, one food that could be considered super is New Zealand's finest export, manuka honey. Manuka honey has numerous health benefits, and can even be used as treatment for wounds, and contains an active agent, which gives the honey antiviral and antibacterial properties.
The New Zealand Honey Co, producers of 100% pure, authentic honey, has improved the health benefits (not to mention the taste!) of its premium Manuka honey with the addition of lemon and root ginger.
Their new Manuka Honey with Lemon has a delicious zesty zing and is packed full of Vitamin C. This makes it a great ingredient for livening up dull salads and desserts. The honey is smooth and fresh, and tastes yummy when added to smoothies and juices.
Ginger, long used as a health food for preventing cancer and migraines, is now being used to create New Zealand Honey Co’s tasty Manuka Honey and Ginger. It has a distinct flavour, making it ideal in marinades for BBQ meats, or rubbed into fresh salmon.
Manuka can transform bland dishes, but it can also be consumed on toast or in your cup of tea, like regular honey. It has a high sugar content, so is probably best used sparingly, though its health benefits greatly outweigh any potential negative effects. It's great for your immune system, and great for your tastebuds. That sounds like the perfect definition of superfood.
The New Zealand Honey Co have also created some great recipes to make the most of Manuka Honey. To find out more, check out newzealandhoneyco.com.
