Chocolate cake is a number two dessert
Seven in ten women spend up to 20 minutes deliberating over whether to have a dessert in a restaurant, a new survey reveals.
The research found that most ladies finally give in to temptation, after wasting time worrying about their waistline and not wanting to look unhealthy in front of their partner.
In fact, sixty per cent of those that can’t resist a pudding, opt to share their dessert with a friend or partner to spare themselves the guilt afterwards.
Yet, despite this most of the women surveyed said they would choose a dessert over a starter and even a main course, with many admitting that a pudding is their favourite part of a whole meal. Men on the other hand don’t think twice about ordering a dessert and are more likely to consider the cost of the pudding than the calories.
In the battle of the sweet treats, cheesecake topped the popularity stakes for both sexes closely followed by chocolate fudge cake in second. After this there was a distinct difference between the tastes of men and women, with spotted dick, jam roly-poly and bread and butter pudding featuring high on the list of men’s favourites with women more likely to order contemporary dishes such as crème brûlée, waffles and tiramisu.
Chris Brewer, Senior Marketing Manager at Crown Carveries which polled the 3,000 Brits on their pudding habits to coincide with the launch of the brand’s new pudding menu, said:
“We are sure this research will strike a chord with families at dinner tables all over the UK, as they deliberate over their choice of pudding. As a nation, over the past couple of years, we have become more adventurous with flavours, but with the results of this survey it was really interesting to see so many traditional puddings appearing high on the list of men’s favourites in particular. Perhaps as a nation our tastebuds have come full circle and the food fads of recent years are due to take a back seat as we all search for a bit of nostalgia on our pudding plates.”
In addition, the survey found that six out of ten Brits say they only ever treat themselves to puddings when they are in a restaurant with many stating that it’s what they look forward to most about going out for dinner. Plus, six out of ten Brits said they felt it was difficult to get their hands on traditional desserts, with many fearing that they are dying out.
The survey also highlighted that women consider having a pudding as a ‘special treat’ that they have on occasions rather than day-to-day.
Chris added: “As a result of the survey, we have updated the pudding menu at all of our 118 Crown Carvery restaurants nationwide to incorporate a mix of both traditional desserts as well as some more ‘posh’ ones for our female customers.”
