Being invited round to a friend's house for dinner is nothing out of the ordinary, but little do you know of the horrors that happen during the making of the meal.
According to a new survey, conducted by Giovanni Rana, Italy's no.1 fresh pasta brand, nearly 15 per cent questioned are guilty of serving dinner guests 'floor pie', in other words, food which has fallen on the floor and a further 10 per cent have knowingly cooked a meal using food that is past it's sell-by-date.
Next time you're offered an invitation, will you be so quick to accept?
A Giovanni Rana spokesperson says: "Food doesn't have to be complicated to taste beautiful; in fact a lot of beauty lies in the quality and simplicity of a few fresh ingredients combined together. Instead of emulating ambitious plates of Food that will score us brownie points among our dinner date guests, we should concentrate on mastering a few simple dishes that are easy to prepare yet speak volumes in terms of flavour."
Which is something that men should certainly be doing, after it was revealed that nearly a quarter of them proudly pretended to have cooked their food entirely from scratch when it was really shop-bought. And a further 21 per cent admitted that they have singed their eyebrows or burnt off some of their hair whilst cooking.
Inviting friends round to eat is certainly the cheaper alternative to going out for a meal, just make sure that you buy some fresh food and grip the plates a little harder to avoid them slipping.
Bon appetit.
