Diet ice-cream could have more calories than they claim

In a shocking story from the Today show, it was found that certain diet desserts had misleading information about their calorie content on their labels. One ice-cream, Arctic Zero's Chocolate Peanut Butter flavour, claimed to have 150 calories per pint, whereas it actually contained nearer 250.

The Vanilla Maple flavour from the same brand had almost 220 calories per pint - a huge 46 per cent more than its advertised 150.

The show tested various diet and low-calorie ice-creams in a top food laboratory, using industry standard methods.

Ice-creams in America are actually allowed to have a slightly higher calorie count than they claim, due to a rule from the US Food and Drink Administration which states that there can be a discrepancy of 20 per cent between the label and the actuality.

Nutritionist Joy Bauer said: "It's right there, front and centre [on the package]. Buy me and you'll lose weight.

"They know they can get away with it because the FDA allows up to 20 per cent wiggle room, so you know they push the envelope a little bit. There's variation. It's upsetting, but it's legal".

Arctic Zero defended its ice-creams, telling the show that its calorie amounts are accurate.
