Cocktail

New research released today reveals that most of us will be reaching for a cocktail over the festive season with almost nine out of 10 of us (85 per cent) opting for a Cosmopolitan or Espresso Martini over a glass or wine or sherry this Christmas.

The research, commissioned by premium espresso brand Gaggia, reveals how TV shows such as Mad Men, Sex in the City and Made in Chelsea have increased our appetite for cocktails with almost two thirds (60 per cent) saying we’ve been influenced by the on screen cocktail moments and half of us (49 per cent) now making cocktails at home.

Yet despite glamour being cited as the image most evoked from cocktails, Sex on the Beach was found to be the nation’s favourite, with one in five of us reaching for this fruity concoction.

It appears that coffee cocktails are a recent trend with nearly 70 per cent of Brits having only tried them in the last two years. Vivienne Palmer, spokesperson from Gaggia said, 'we’ve recently seen the espresso cup outsell the tea mug as us Brits become a nation of coffee drinkers and with so many of us owning coffee machines, coffee cocktails have never been easier to make at home.'

- Nine out of 10 will opt for a cocktail this Christmas
- The nation’s favourite cocktail is still the Sex on the Beach
- Southerners most likely to drink cocktails
- 60 per cent are influenced by glamorous TV shows
- One in five men now host cocktail evenings at home

And it’s not just women; thanks to characters such as Don Draper and James Bond, nearly one in five men now own a cocktail shaker and host cocktail evenings at home.

The research also showed how those of us in the south are most likely to reach for this tipple with over three quarters owning their own cocktail shaker, compared to just one quarter up north.

Londoners are found to drink the most cocktails, with one in five drinking them at least once a week. They are also most likely to try new ingredients, with one quarter regularly experimenting with their cocktails by adding ingredients like coffee. In fact, one in four Londoners regularly enjoy coffee based cocktails like the Espresso Martini, compared to just one in 10 people from Wales.

Palmer added; 'The research shows how the cocktail is the drink of the moment. We’re looking to recreate these stylish scenarios in our own homes and cocktails are one of the ways we can do it!'
