As the schools begin to break up and weather turns warmer, summer holiday season is upon us. Research from Knorr has found that the traditional foreign summer holiday is inspiring Brits to get in the kitchen with almost half (41%) cooking their favourite holiday dish at home
Italy and France top foodie hotspots
Over 2 million British people visited Italy in 2010 and the research shows that Italy is the number one culinary destination for British food lovers with over a third (38%) choosing it as their favourite, with France (11%) and Spain (9%) also featuring in the top three.
And the Italian theme continues with Italian favourites Spaghetti Bolognese (15%) and Lasagne (10%) taking the number two and three spots for most popular dishes at the nations’ dinner table.
Taking ‘foreign’ food to a whole new level
Some Brits are taking the idea of eating foreign food to new levels with 15 per cent claiming to have cooked something they couldn't pronounce or weren't really sure what it.
An impressive 6 per cent say they have actually killed their own food before cooking and eating it while 3% claim to have eaten food that was still alive.
Home is where the heart is
Despite inspiration from foreign shores, the research found that the traditional British roast is still the nation’s favourite meal with almost two thirds of Brits (64%) cooking one in the last week.
And while summer holidays may be inspiring Brits to cook foreign food, only a third (38%) would describe themselves as confident in the kitchen with almost half (41%) saying they would need to travel abroad to improve their skills.
Fending off stiff competition from foreign rivals, three quarters (75%) of the nation prefer British cuisine to any other type of food with Italian and Indian featuring in the top three.
"Despite the influence that foreign food is having on the British palate it’s great to see that the traditional roast is still popular among Brits.
"It’s no surprise that Italy is the number one food destination as data from our website has shown that the number of people looking for Pasta recipes in the last two weeks has increased by 24%," says Marco Pierre White.
