Three quarters of people think BBQing is a man's job

According to a poll of 400 people by online garden centre, GardeningExpress.co.uk, 76% believed that cooking on a barbeque was strictly a man’s task.

“You have to remember too that behind every traditional male job, is a good woman organising it".

However, only 13% of those polled thought that it was up to the men to do the cleaning.

A spokesperson for GardeningExpress.co.uk commented: “It is interesting to see that some household chores are still seen as gender specific.

“Another point to make is that whilst certain chores may be seen as a man’s job it is highly plausible that a smaller percentage of men actually do the task.

“You have to remember too that behind every traditional male job, is a good woman organising it. A man may become chef when the BBQ is out, but the female in the family often shops for the food and prepare it, invites guests, open the beer and is on hand to clear up afterwards. All the alpha male needs to do is put the food on the grill and turn it once in a while.”

The poll made no allowances for people to think that a chore should be equally shared by both genders.  As one woman who took part in the survey said: “I think it is just wrong to say that one job is the sole responsibility of one gender. I’m no Germaine Greer but to say the 13% believe cleaning is a man’s job infers that 87% believe it to be a woman’s chore. It should be an equal partnership!”

She wittily added: “Plus, I don’t see why BBQing is such a manly role? I guess only men could somehow manage to turn a sausage to charcoal on the outside but leave it raw in the middle.”
