Every Thursday at Female First, we love to sit and think about all of the stuff that has entertained us in the past for countless hours, much of which we'd love to see make a triumphant return today. Hoping to deliver a dose of nostalgia to readers in our new series, we will this week be taking a look back and listening to some of the best pop hits from the '90s, that have kept us dancing right through to the modern day!
Happy Throwback Thursday!
7. MMMbop by Hanson (1997)
Hanson were off to a brilliant start when they released MMMbop as the lead single from their debut album in 1997, picking up two Grammy nominations and going to number one in 12 countries, including the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand. The three brothers may not have seen success like it since, but they've cemented a legacy and ensured that the tune will be played and sang along to in the many decades to come.
6. S Club Party by S Club 7 (1999)
The '90s was closed out by one of the biggest pop bangers of all time. We all know there ain't no party like an S Club Party! S Club 7 were one of the most diverse groups any of us can remember, and though their members would eventually start dropping like flies until the group split up entirely, many will remember them with fond memories. Who can forget waking up early on the weekend to watch the group hit America in Miami 7? Legendary!
5. I'll Be There For You by The Rembrandts (1995)
Surely there isn't a person alive who hasn't heard this track? As the theme tune for Friends, it's one of the most instantly-recognisable tunes for anybody who owns a television, and has everybody singing along whenever it's played! The track would become the highest-selling single of 1995 in Canada, whilst also climbing the charts in countries such as the UK, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
4. I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys (1999)
There's nothing better than a good pop ballad. That's exactly what Backstreet Boys delivered with the lead single from their third studio album, with I Want It That Way. Written by Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson, the tune explores a strained relationship that is being hampered by emotional and physical distance. Kids pretended they could relate, and one of the best songs of the '90s was born.
3. You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette (1995)
Way on the other end of the breakup scale is this absolute banger from Alanis Morissette. You Oughta Know is a bitter spewing of venom aimed at an ex-partner who has moved on with somebody else. It's absolutely incredible, and now that we're in adulthood, we get to sing along to all of the naughty lyrics, with fire in our hearts and a cross to burn.
2. Wannabe by Spice Girls (1996)
Back to the fun hits here, with Wannabe from Spice Girls! They reunited this year (2019) for a tour that took the UK by storm, and this was without a doubt the song that got the loudest reception. With a music video that is forever engraved in our minds, we'll forever wonder what the ladies meant when they sang, "You got G like MC who likes it on a"...
1. ...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears (1998)
You can't mention pop music in the '90s without thinking about the Princess of Pop herself, Britney Spears! Making her debut in 1998 with one of the catchiest pop tunes ever, she would go on to cement a legacy that has been untouched by all those who came after her. Whilst she's currently on a break due to her father's ill health, she's expected to make a return to Las Vegas for her hugely-successful residency at some point in the near future.
