Following last night's (June 7) incredible opening match, which saw France fend off South Korea and put four balls past the keeper to secure the first three points of the season, the FIFA Women's World Cup is well underway.

With such a mass of incredible talent competing on behalf of their home nations, we've picked out some of the best footballers taking to the pitch this year, in the hopes of bringing back the World Cup trophy for their country.

7. Eugénie Le Sommer (France)

Le Sommer scored the first goal of the tournament in just nine minutes against South Korea, and will certainly be one landing her strikes in the back of the net in the coming games. Creative with her attacks, Le Sommer showed England players exactly what she was made of at the 2015 World Cup, where she scored the one and only goal in a match against England. Expect her to be amongst the top goalscorers of the tournament.

6. Christine Sinclair (Canada)

As captain of the Canadian national team, Sinclair is obviously a very talented player. With a career that spans 19 years, she could make history in this year's World Cup, and is just four goals away from setting the record as the greatest goal scorer in international football history. That includes men, as well as women!

5. Sofia Jakobsson (Sweden)

Earlier this year, Jakobsson won her 100th cap in a friendly game against Austria following her recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the start of 2017. Back better than ever before, she could be the driving force for the Swedish team, and could prove to allow Sweden to become the dark horse of the tournament. Keep an eye on their early matches to make your mind up on whether or not they can go all the way.

4. Lucy Bronze (England)

Bronze's career started when she began playing for Sunderland at under-12 academy level, before making her move to the senior team when she turned 16. Since that point, she has been one of the hottest stars on the field, scoring some sensational goals and ensuring that her name is one that will go down in history. If you've ever been on the fence about watching women's football, watch some of Bronze's best moments; you'll be sold for life.

3. Dzsenifer Marozsán (Germany)

Marozsán is a huge name in Germany following her game-winning goal in the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 against Sweden. She would then go on to score in the Olympic final at Rio 2016, where Germany beat Sweden 2-1, before being named her country's Female Footballer of the Year in 2017. Expect her to keep collecting those accolades in the coming years!

2. Kim Little (Scotland)

Little is one of the most celebrated players in her homeland, thanks to her help in gaining titles and trophies as part of Hibernian L.F.C. in the Scottish Women's Premier League. Since she was 16, Little has represented her country and was one of only two Scots selected for the Great Britain squad at the 2012 London Olympics. It's going to be very interesting to see how she plays during this tournament, and in which direction her career will take from this point on.

1. Alex Morgan (USA)

Currently the favourites to win this year's World Cup, the USA squad can thank their lucky stars that they've got Morgan on their side. This striker is renowned for her style on the pitch, effortlessly smashing goals into the back of the net, and fans cannot wait to see how many she'll get past the professional goalies this year.
