It’s been a while since we spotlighted our favourite podcasts on Female First, but there’s something about the New Year that makes us want to jump into a whole bunch of new shows to see if we find something that piques our interest!
With true crime always a killer choice, we got to searching for pods tackling some of the strangest and most compelling criminal cases that we hadn’t yet had the chance to check out. First on our list? RedHanded.
After meeting at a party just a few years back, Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire drunkenly decided that they should start a true crime podcast. With just a £10 microphone, the two locked themselves in a cupboard under Hannah’s stairs and recorded their first episode within a few months.
It didn’t take long for the podcast to become a hit. Internationally-renowned for their storytelling and wicked chemistry, the self-proclaimed ‘Spooky Bitches’ can go from chatting about some of the most horrific crime scenes in history, to tearing down the outgoing President of the United States and fighting for the end of period poverty, before returning to the business at-hand.
This is the sort of thing that many of us look for in our podcasts; an atmosphere which instantly allows you to feel a part of the gang and as if you’re in the midst of a conversation between friends. It’s a formula that always works and one that Suruthi and Hannah have mastered expertly.
It also really helps that Hannah kinda sounds like young Ben from Outnumbered with certain inflections. Iconic.
Their passion for the pod is clear. The research that the two put into the stories they talk about is perhaps the most refined and well-done of all the true crime podcasts we’ve ever listened to. Think you knew everything about Austrian monster Josef Fritzl? Think again. Enjoy three episodes dedicated to his life of crime which reveal details the majority of us would never have known existed.
Yet to release an official new episode in 2021, we’re excited to see the pair make their return and get to telling us some terrifying new tales, in the way that only they can.
Episodes tend to drop on Thursdays, so fingers crossed January 7th 2021 will see their 2021 debut!
Oh, and when the world sorts itself out, we’re hopeful they’ll be taking to the stage again for some exciting live shows! Keep an eye on www.redhandedpodcast.com for updates.
