This week it's Over My Dead Body

The great thing about podcasts is how conveniently simple they are to consume – you could be driving, cooking, working out – they require no visual engagement. All you need is a handy device to listen on, and you can go about your daily life listening to whatever you enjoy.

From crime to comedy, history to health, there’s something for everyone in the wonderful world of audio programmes.

Our favourite podcast this week is Over My Dead Body.

Why: This series, produced by network Wondery, is currently sitting at the top of the podcast charts. Being on the constant look-out for brilliant listening, we had to check out what was so good about this podcast.

You’ve probably heard of the Dirty John – the series which has recently aired on Netflix – and the podcast that came out was produced by the same people that made Over My Dead Body.

It’s a true crime podcast – good news for the junkies who are always trying to find their next crime documentary fix. It sometimes seems like there aren’t enough programmes (both visual and audio) to keep up with our addiction.

If you’ve been keeping up with our Podcast of the Week series, you’ll know how much we appreciate a story told well. We’re journalists – we know how important it is to tell a story in a way that reels the audience in. There are lots of twists and turns in this story, and so it’s important it’s told in a well-structured way. Matt Shaer does this perfectly.

Who’s the host? Matthew Shaer, a first-time podcast host and an Atlanta-based writer for the New York Times Magazine, talks us through this story. With the inclusion of interviews and extra audio from the time of the case, it feels exactly like a TV show, only, it’s not.

This might sound daft – but many true crime podcasts don’t include the kind of audio that helps tell the story in a more detailed, open way. A lot of true crime podcasts are just told by one presenter and co-host. With Over My Dead Body, you hear from people that were involved in the case and close to the victims.

What’s it about? This true crime podcast tells the story of Dan Markel, a prominent Florida State University law professor who was shot to death in 2014. Dan was killed in his own garage, and there were many theories on what could’ve happened.

Burglary and robbery attempts gone wrong were the first thoughts in the investigation, but as the story continues, there are plenty of turns which leads to other avenues.

The podcast examines the repercussions of race, wealth and privilege as it follows the murder case.

Where can I listen? You can listen to this hit podcast on Spotify, iTunes, Stitcher and Tune In. Alternatively, you can go straight to their website and listen on there.
