It has just been announced that Jim Carrey is set to portray Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the forthcoming live action movie Sonic the Hedgehog. His unique brand of unrestrained slapstick humour and memorable catchphrases make him a comedy legend, so we're feeling nostalgic about some of his other memorable roles.

Bruce Nolan (Bruce Almighty)

Most memorable quote: "B-E-A-Utiful."

We've all wondered what it would be like to play God, and Jim Carrey does exactly that in this 2003 comedy co-starring Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Aniston. When he loses his patience with the big guy in the sky, he is given the gift of godly powers - and soon realises that it's a lot harder to be God than he ever could have imagined.

Ace Ventura (Ace Ventura)

Most memorable quote: "Allllllrighty then!"

The world's favourite and, alas, only pet detective, Ace Ventura uses his wildlife instincts to solve crimes against the animal kingdom in 1994's Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and 1995's Ace Venture: When Nature Calls. Possibly the role Carrey is best known for, and certainly the one with the best lines.

Stanley Ipkiss (The Mask)

Most memorable quote: "It's party time. P-A-R-T.. Why? Because I gotta!"

Loosely based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name, this 1994 film follows a down and out bank clerk who comes across a mysterious mask which transforms him into a mischievous and flamboyant gangster with superpowers who exacts revenge on those who have ridiculed him. No-one can do this role better than Jim Carrey.

Lloyd Christmas (Dumb and Dumber)

Most memorable quote: "We got no food, we got no jobs... our PETS' HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!"

1994 was clearly a good year for Jim Carrey as we recognise yet another of his awesome film roles of that time. He and Jeff Daniels portray two best friends who are by no means the sharpest tools in the box, but they do have hearts of gold. Their reckless natures land them in a number of hilariously sticky situations in Dumb and Dumber.

The Grinch (How the Grinch Stole Christmas)

Most memorable quote: "It's because I'm green isn't it?"

Our favourite Dr. Seuss protagonist (antagonist?) was brought to life with side-splitting vitality in 2000. Carrey has such a talent for making even the most odious of characters loveable - which is exactly the point in this particular movie. He will always be the Grinch in our hearts no matter how many reboots are made.

Count Olaf (Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events)

Most memorable quote: "I'm sorry. I don't speak monkey."

The villainous distant relation of the wealthy Baudelaire orphans who will stop at nothing to get his hands on their enormous fortune - even after he loses custody. He returns time and time again in different guises in a bid to kidnap the children, and we just can't get enough of him. Truly a bad guy we love to hate; he did Lemony Snicket proud.

Chip Douglas (The Cable Guy)

Most memorable quote: "You know what the trouble about real life is? There's no danger music."

This is without doubt Jim Carrey's creepiest role to date and that includes Count Olaf. Even so, the film isn't seen as one of director Ben Stiller's greatest successes, which is a shame because you really can't help but be gripped by a story about an obsessive cable guy who stalks one of his customers and ruins his life when he gets rejected.
