Women in sport are finally getting the recognition that they deserve, and nobody celebrates female empowerment more than we do at Female First.
That’s why we have been so excited to reveal our five nominees and winner of Athlete of the Year! Here they are:
Chloe Kim
Chloe Kim is an American snowboarder and has not only been a sporting champion in 2018, but also a champion for women in sports too.
At the Winter Olympics this year, she became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding medal when she won gold in the Women’s Snowboard Halfpipe, aged just 17.
She is also a four-time X Games gold medallist and the first woman to win two gold medals in snowboarding at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Phew!
Other major achievements Chloe has made include being accepted into the prestigious Princeton University, and winning three ESPYs for Best Female Athlete, Best Female Olympian, and Best Female Action Sports Athlete. Oh, and Barbie is making a doll of her in their new line of inspiring women. Wow.
Serena Williams
If you don’t know who Serena Williams is by now, then there is a serious problem. She’s the most well-known female in tennis, alongside her sister, Venus.
Women’s Tennis Association ranked her world number one in singles on eight separate occasions between 2002 and 2017. Yes, eight.
She holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined among active players.
Her long list of successes and achievements go on and on. She is also a style icon as well a champion for female empowerment.
P.V. Sindhu
Professional badminton player, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, is a phenomenal sportswoman and has achieved much recognition for her athletic success this year.
She became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal and is one of only two Indian badminton players to ever win an Olympic medal.
In this year’s Commonwealth Games, she also won silver in the women’s singles. We're sure her name will be making headlines for years to come!
Dina Asher-Smith
British sprinter, Dina Asher-Smith, is the 2016 and 2018 European champion of the 200 metres, and the 2018 European champion of the 100 metres, meaning this year has been a big one for her.
In this years Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, she won 4 x 100m gold and 200m bronze, making the games a monumental part of her athletic career.
All this, all before she even turned 23 at the beginning of December!
Nafissatou Thiam
Nafissatou Thiam is a Belgian female athlete that has achieve plenty in her career so far.
Not only is she the European champion at heptathlon, she is also world leading and unbeaten in the sport.
She is also world number three at high jump, holds the Belgian record in women’s heptathlon and the record for javelin – just imagine being that talented!
