Throughout our Conspiracy of the Week series, we've looked at some conspiracies that could have huge implications for the globe, and other little silly ones that are a lot of fun, but wouldn't cause too much of a stir even if they were true. This week's subject matter however, is one of the strangest of all. Plus, if it turns out to be true, we could realise just how insignificant we, the general public, really are in the grand scheme of things.
So what's the conspiracy?
There are some people who believe leading governments across the world have access to 'weather weapons'. This would mean they could control and manipulate certain traits of the weather to their advantage, pushing other countries into meltdown by meddling with their climate.
The theory really blew up in 2012, when former President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that enemies of his country were destroying their rain clouds, thus creating a dangerous drought. According to news reports cited by Reuters, he said: "The enemy destroys the clouds that are headed towards our country and this is a war Iran will win." He was quickly dismissed by media across the world as a conspiracy theorist, with the claims laughed out of the news.
Vice President of Iran, Hassan Mousavi agreed, however. He was quoted by AFP as saying: "The world arrogance and colonist (the West) are influencing Iran's climate conditions using technology. The drought is an acute issue and soft war is completely evident... This level of drought is not normal."
What do the experts say?
Reuters sat down with atmospheric scientist Arlen Huggins to discuss the claims. The Nevada State Weather Modification Program Director explained: "In terms of dissipating clouds, you can do it on a very small scale but not anything that could change a weather pattern or create a drought situation." With Huggins also working for the Military Industrial Complex, and The Desert Research Institute which is associated with American government agencies however, not everybody believes the 'evidence'.
Do 'weather weapons' actually exist?
Yes, they absolutely do! Whether they're used to wage war on other countries is anybody's guess, but China last year launched the world's largest weather control machine, which they believed could modify the weather in an area the same size of Alaska. This came a decade after they manipulated Beijing's climate just before the Olympics, to ensure rain wouldn't fall during the event.
Knowing that this sort of thing is going on is mindblowing, to say the very least. There's no doubt that the more powerful technology gets, the more governments are going to be able to do with their 'weather weapons'. That's a very scary thought, and one we're sure will be haunting us for the decades to come.
