We’re often slammed as Brits for having a ‘stiff upper lip’ and it turns out there may be good reason for it. A recent study has revealed that we only show appreciation to our work colleagues four times a month.
Even saying a simple ‘thank you’ seems to be a rarity, and Christmas is no exception.
Even though we spend the majority of the week with our colleagues, we’re still more likely to express gratitude to our postmen and pub landlords, than the people we work with every day.
And, women are guilitier of this than men. According to the results, men show appreciation on average 5 occasions per month, that’s once more than women.
And despite our awkwardness to be kinder to our colleagues, there are people in our lives that we do show gratitude towards often. We show love and appreciation to the postman on average six times a month - the same amount of times we do for some family members!
But there is a reason why we hold back these feelings. The study by Interflora showed that a quarter of us avoid telling people how we feel out of embarrassment.
And so, in the run up to Christmas, the flower experts at Interflora are encouraging people to wear their heart on their sleeve, asking us to tell the people in our lives exactly how we feel and what they mean to us.
Commenting on the results of the research, Erica Nicholson, Senior Brand Manager at Interflora, said: “In the UK, there’s a stereotype that we all have a stiff upper lip when it comes to showing our emotions, and we often avoid doing it altogether. However, as our research shows, people are desperate to be told they are loved and appreciated by the people closest to them. Not only that, but there are tangible benefits to both parties when it comes to sharing a heart-felt sentiment, not least when it comes to our happiness and self-esteem.
“We understand the importance of showing someone you’re thinking of them and how much you care – we’ve been helping people to do just that for almost a century. Whether it’s a grand gesture, a birthday celebration, a simple thank you to a friend, or even ‘just because’; it’s so important to translate that thought into action and send more love those around us – it really could mean the world to them!”
As the festive season is upon us, it’s the perfect time to ditch the stereotype and send a little more love this Christmas. Want to be part of the 75% who aren’t embarrassed to show some love this Christmas?
