Joan Rivers

Kathy Griffin is replacing Joan Rivers on 'Fashion Police'.

The 54-year-old comedienne will take the place of the late star - who died from complications while undergoing a minor operation on her vocal cords in September - on the E! series alongside Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and fellow newcomer Brad Goreski, reports US Weekly.

She will make her debut on the show when the series returns in 2015 in a brand new format which will see the formerly weekly programme air over 17 episodes, focussing on A-list events including the Emmys, Grammys and Oscars.

Kathy said in a statement: "I get it! These are some big shoes I'm going to fill.

"Joan was truly one of a kind. Now I hope you will accept me for me. I'm just Kathy. Did I say I'm just Kathy? I meant I'm Kathy f**king Griffin and you celebrities better strap yourself in, as I am taking no prisoners. I am not holding back so dammit let's have some fun!"

Kathy has also received the blessing of the late star's daughter, Melissa Rivers, to take over the role.

Melissa, who is the Executive Producer of the series, said: "Kathy just feels right, and Brad brings a fun, new voice to join Giuliana and Kelly in this ensemble.

"I'm excited to see where this panel takes this series my mother so adored in this next incarnation."

Kathy has been tipped for the role ever since it was revealed Joan had "always given her blessing" to the flame-haired beauty taking over the position.

An insider said: "Joan has always given her blessing to Kathy. They talked about it many times. They have such a similar sense of humour and were the best of friends. Joan would have loved seeing Kathy on Fashion Police and she would have definitely approved."
