Jared Leto has splashed out $5 million on a new home in Los Angeles.

The 'Dallas Buyers Club' star, 43, has purchased an eight-bedroom mansion in Hollywood Hills West, which used to form part of the Lookout Mountain Air Force Station, where the Pentagon's motion picture and photograph unit processed and edited video footage and photographs of nuclear tests, missile firings and rocket launches.

The lavish 1940s compound sits on 1.5-acres and also features a bomb shelter, swimming pool, large car park, soundstage, art galleries, a movie theatre and 12 bathrooms, according to the LA Times newspaper.

The Oscar winner bought the property - which last sold two decades ago for $750,000 - off-market in a private sale.

News that the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman has splurged on a new home in LA comes as no surprise, as he previously professed his love for the city, where he spent a lot of his childhood, in a documentary for the band's song 'City of Angels' in 2013.

He said at the time: "'City Of Angels' is a short film about this wild, weird, and wonderful land, Los Angeles, California. A place that has left its mark on the world's imagination and a place where dreams can actually come true. I made this short film so I could share my thoughts on this incredibly special place and talk to others about theirs."
