Zoe Saldana was forced to learn how to drive after her relatives grew tired of acting as her chauffeur and staged an "intervention".
The star never felt the need to apply for a driving license after growing up in metropolitan New York City, but she struggled to find her way around town without the help of her family when she relocated to Los Angeles in 2006 to shoot Hollywood blockbuster Avatar.
And it was only after months of pestering her loved ones to drive her to auditions and interviews and on shopping trips that they confronted her - and sent her to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
The 33 year old explains, "I was living in New York and I was lazy. And then I moved out here (to Los Angeles) five years ago to do a small movie called Avatar and, as I started training, I had a driver that would take me to set and to all my classes.
“But once I stopped filming the movie, I was relying on the kindness of all my family and friends to take me to the supermarket so I could go and buy eggs and milk, and then they got tired of it and I went to the DMV and I got my license.
"I'm like (calling) my mum, my sisters, 'What are you doing? I gotta go shopping! I'm out of toilet paper, can somebody please...?' And they would come and after a while they had an intervention.
“They're like, 'Zoe, enough is enough. You're gonna be 30 soon and we can't drive you forever!' So they drove me to the DMV, they taught me how to drive."
Saldana celebrated passing the test by purchasing a new car - but she fears she made the wrong move as she's still getting used to driving herself around.
She says, "I just got myself an Audi S6. I should have just gotten a used car and smashed it up, but I went and leased a brand new car."
