Vanessa Redgrave showed her support for a group of Irish travellers evicted from their U.K. homes by accompanying them to court on Wednesday (31Aug11).
The Oscar winner visited the embattled illegal residents of Dale Farm in Basildon, Essex earlier this week (begs29Aug11) after learning authorities had told them to vacate the land they've lived on for years.
They were ordered to leave the site by Wednesday, and subsequently took their case to London's High Court to apply for a temporary injunction to stop the eviction.
Redgrave, who has long sympathised with the plight and treatment of gypsies around the world, attended the hearing and spoke of her disappointment after a judge threw out their case.
She told reporters, "The greenbelt and the environment have won over the communities and lives of human beings who have not actually disturbed the greenbelt.
"This should never have come to court. Dale Farm should have been left where they were and encouraged and not be ruled against every time they tried to get it sorted out."
