Ryan Giggs' took out an injunction after his affair with Imogen Thomas

Following the exposure of Ryan Giggs' alleged affair with BB's Imogen Thomas, the Attorney General has warned that Twitter users could face legal action for contempt of court if they breach privacy injunctions.

Giggs' lawyers are taking legal action to try and identify those who anonymously posted about the affair on the micro-blogging website.

MP's have argued that to attempt to prosecute 75,000 site users wouldn't be possible but now people found to be deliberately breaching court orders can be fined or even imprisoned for contempt.

Attorney General Dominic Grieve said today that Twitter users were not excluded from privacy orders and that those that "act with impunity" could find themselves in for "a rude shock."

He told BBC Radio 4's Law In Action: "I will take action if I think that my intervention in necessary in the public interest, to maintain the rule of law, proportionate and will achieve an end of upholding the rule of law."
