Today actress Suranne Jones helped the National Lottery launch its Love UK campaign which aims to discover what puts the Great into Great Britain.
The former Coronation Street star is the spokesperson for the fortnight long campaign. "The National Lottery have done a survey about what people love about Britain and we have discovered that we love traditional things down to fish and chips and roast dinners. We love history and heritage both of these came high up the list."
With 28p from every Lottery pound going to funding good causes Whatever it is that you love about the this country it's highly likely that the National Lottery have had a hand in supporting it. "The Lottery has never released the figures of what they have given back. They raise £25 million per weekand in total that is £20 billion and I think that that is staggering the Lottery has helped make Britain a better place to live. "The Lottery funds so many projects such as Millennium Bridge and Angel of the North the Olympics and the paralympics. They have also funded smaller projects such as bringing farm life to city children and some of these smaller projects have only had grants of £5000."
The Lottery has also supported the arts such as funding movies and theatres and helped protect habitats for rare species by buying three tmes the size of the Isle of Wight.
When asked what she liked most about Britain Suranne said: "I like to holiday here I do go away as well but I love Cornwall and the Lake District we have some beautiful landscapes and countryside." 29% of those who took the survey agree with Suranne that the Uk's landscapes and enviroment are the country's best quality whilst 38% believed it was the history and heritage of the UK that made it so great. 39% said that our sense of humour was the best asset of UK socoiey and 37% said it was our right to freedom of speech. "I have to agree with the sense of humour I think this counrty has a great sense of humour I think that we are a very friendly nation. Also we have got to remember if you look at us on a map it's great that we have all these qualities for so small a country."
Over the next fortnight Suranne will be appearing on numerous television shows including GMTV and Loose Women to promote the campaign. "I have done all the local radio stations I thought that this was important because it's a survey with regional results that I wanted to speak to them individually not make a sweeping statement.
