Loveable rogue Russell Brand has been voted one of the nation’s best-loved eccentric celebrities of today.
New research from first direct finds over half of under 35s (51 per cent) voted Brand their favourite eccentric celeb. The ‘Get Him to the Greek’ star has not only managed to bag American pop sensation Katy Perry, but has made eccentricity something British youth culture wants to be part of.
Despite his popularity with the younger generation, wild-haired Russell was beaten to Britain’s No.1 eccentric idol spot by equally mop-haired Boris Johnson. The London Mayor’s quirky manner and loose-tongued ways have made him an eccentric national sweetheart with 42 per cent.
Original punk rebel Vivienne Westwood got the female vote, with over half of all women (48 per cent) loving the flame-haired designer’s individual style.
No longer the sole preserve of the rich and famous, today more than one in 10 Brits (13 per cent), six million people across the country, can be classified as true Russ and Boris style eccentrics.
To mark its 21st birthday, first directt commissioned the Future Foundation to explore and champion the unique individuals who make Britain great.
The resulting ‘Colourful Lives’ report is a celebration of all that’s individual, quirky and just plain eccentric.
Head of Marketing, Paul Say, said: "Quirky celebs with a liberal attitude - typified by Russell Brand - have helped change the public’s view of what being eccentric means.
"With as many as 32 million Brits (65 per cent) proudly admitting to quirky characteristics, it seems the nation is now overflowing with colourful eccentricity."
