Robin Wright is urging the bosses of America's leading electronics companies to be more aware of what is happening in the Congo, where they are mining for gadget minerals, after learning the export business is supporting the abuse of women and girls.

The Forrest Gump star has signed on as a spokesperson for online charity Raise Hope For Congo and is keen to open up about the atrocities happening in the camps set up around mines which provide vital elements for top electronics firms.

Talking about the cause on chat show Chelsea Lately in the U.S. on Tuesday (03Jan12), she explained, "Every 48 minutes a woman is being raped in and around these mines and it's been going on for about six years, and nobody knows about it.

"It's not about boycotting the products, we're never gonna boycott the products; it's about raising the awareness of the electronic companies."

And she hopes her awareness effort will make Apple bosses think twice before they join the rush to mine the Congo.

She added, "They are very close and they are the biggest, the most mainstream... If we can get them to be conflict-free mineral products... everyone will follow."

Wright is directing fans and those interested to visit the website RaiseHopeForCongo.org and sign standard letters to politicians and electronics company bosses.
