Ricky Gervais has dismissed speculation Julie Andrews is set to voice a lead character in the big screen adaptation of his children's book series Flanimals.

The British funnyman has teamed up with Matt Selman, a writer for The Simpsons, to create a 3-D animated version based on his four hit books, which are all based in a world of outlandish, imaginary creatures.

Gervais has approached several top Hollywood stars to work on the project - but insists the Sound of Music legend isn't one of them.

He says, "Julie Andrews isn't involved - that's a myth. I don't know where that came from.

"I'm certainly looking at the big boys for this. I would like to pitch to people like Ben Stiller and Jack Black, really good comic performers. I have characters in mind for them."

Gervais is a busy boy at the moment with Cemetery Junction on the horizon, a film the funnyman has also directed.
