Nia Vardalos' bout of ill health was just the wake up call the My Big Fat Greek Wedding star needed after her weight soared following suffering from depression.
The actress was distraught after doctors told her that she and her husband would be unlikely to be able to conceive, and she retreated from the spotlight.
Her weight crept up and Vardalos began to suffer from dizzy spells.
She tells People.com, "My blood sugar went out of control (and) diabetes runs in my family so I went to see my doctor. He was like, 'Buck up', and it was sort of the wake-up call that I needed to hear."
The star has since created her own diet programme and takes daily walks and is now feeling much better.
She says, "It was never about that Hollywood pressure to lose weight, I laugh at that. It was always just an issue of health. Some people have been calling it a comeback, I actually call it a resurfacing."
In December last year (08) Vardalos and her husband got the family they wished for after they adopted a five-year-old daughter.
And her new look can been seen in upcoming romantic comedy My Life n Ruins.
