Mel Gibson is celebrating five years sober.
The Braveheart actor has long battled a drinking problem and hit the headlines in 2006 when he was busted for driving under the influence (DUI) - the same incident in which he made a series of anti-Semitic remarks to the arresting officer.
Gibson entered an alcohol recovery programme after the arrest and he has managed to stay off the booze ever since, according to TMZ.com.
The actor marked the milestone on Friday (29Jul11) with a small gathering of friends.
Gibson's acting career has appeared to struggle but he returned to the big screen this summer in the Jodie Foster directed The Beaver.
He has already completed work on How I Spent My Summer Vacation, which is directed by Adrian Grunberg, and had Sleight of Hand in the pipeline.
