Desperately Seeking Susan, an eighties movie which starred Madonna is set to become a stage musical featuring the songs of Blondie and Deborah Harry. The London production, which is the brainchild of Peter Michael Marino, will be directed by Angus Jackson when it begins a run at the Novello Theatre on 12 October (07).Blondie frontwoman Harry has written a new song, Moment Of Truth, for the show, which will play alongside her established hits, like Heart of Glass.British actress Emma Williams will star as Susan, the part originally played by Madonna in the 1985 movie, which also featured Rosanna Arquette and Aidan Quinn.Desperately Seeking Susan was released in 1985 and was directed by Susan Seidelman.Arquette won a Bafta and a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Roberta, a bored surburban housewife who becomes fascinated by a woman, Madonna, who she reads about in the personals section of a New York newspaper.When 'Desperately Seeking Susan' suggests to meet any man who seeks her in Battery Park Roberta goes along to ctch a glimpse of this mystery woman.
The New York Times claimed that it was the best film of the year and it was to be Madonna's break into the music industry as well as one of her more acclaimed acting roles.
The musical, which will be directed by Angus Jackson, will open in the Novello Theatre in London in November.
