The Hurt Locker, The Hangover and George Clooney's new movie Up In The Air have had the gold seal of approval.
They have been named among the American Film Institute's 10 best films of 2009.
Also making the list is Sugar, Up, A Single Man, A Serious Man, The Messenger, Coraline and Precious.
Meanwhile, judges including writer/director David Milch and actress CCH Pounder picked out the best TV Shows of the year.
They chose Big Love, Glee, True Blood and sitcom The Big Bang Theory among the best TV shows of the year.
The AFI will honour those selected at a gala in Los Angeles on 15 January
