Gil Bernal dies aged 80

Gil Bernal has died at the age of 80.

The Saxaphone player passed away from congestive heart failure at a Glendale hospital on 17 July, according the LA Times.

Bernal was known for his time in the late jazz star Lionel Hampton's band, before leaving to form his own group in 1950s.

He went on to work with Spike Jones and on Ry Cooder's 1997 Cuban music release, Buena Vista Social Club.

He will be most remembered for his performance on 1950's hit Smokey Joe's Cafe.
