George Clooney Concedes Oscar Defeat To Day-lewis....

George Clooney is already conceding Best Actor Oscar victory to Daniel Day-Lewis, claiming no one has a chance against the British star. The pair are on the shortlist for the prize at this month's (Feb08) ceremony, alongside Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises, Tommy Lee Jones for No Country For Old Men and Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. But Clooney has already given up hope of winning for his role in Michael Clayton - to add to his Best Supporting Academy Award for Syriana - after watching Day-Lewis in his nominated role in There Will Be Blood. He says, "If you want my honest opinion, I think it's going to be Daniel Day-Lewis. He sort of irritates all of us because he's so good. I'll tell you right now, I don't like him!" In other news the actor George Clooney feared he had ruined his thriving Hollywood career - after appearing as the lead in the 1997 flop Batman And Robin. The Academy Award winner doubted his reputation would recover after playing the superhero in the critically mauled movie, but claims the bad reviews enabled him to choose better projects for future roles. He says, "At that point I realised I'd better start picking better."My next three movies were Out Of Sight, Three Kings and O Brother, Where Art Thou? It was, 'Ok, at last I understand now what I want to do.'" Meanwhile in other news George Clooney is confident the 'golden age' of cinema has passed - and current movies fail to live up to the greatness of their predecessors. The actor-turned-director believes the works of directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick between 1964 and 1976 will never be matched by modern-day film.

He tells British magazine the Radio Times, "It's 12 years and you could find 10 films a year that are masterpieces. They don't make those films anymore. You couldn't come near to making those films".
