David Cronenberg recalls the car crash at the beginning of his Scanners shoot in 1980, saying that it would have ended most young filmakers' careers.

Two motorists collided when one slowed down to watch highway filming of the thriller, and cast and crew had to drop everything in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

He tells The Hollywood Reporter: "They slowed down, and the guy behind them didn't. My grip jumped over the fence and pulled the woman out of the car, but they were dead, and that was our first day of shooting.

"I thought if I could survive that, I could survive anything."
