Dave Gahan with band Depeche Mode

Dave Gahan need to watch out who he socialises with because of his fear that he will be tempted back into using drugs.

The Depeche Mode rocker became hooked on heroin in his band's heyday in the 1980s and 90s and almost died from an overdose in 1996.

The Depeche Mode have had forty-eight songs in the UK Singles Chart and #1 albums in UK, US and throughout Europe. Depeche Mode have sold over 100 million albums and singles worldwide, making them the most successful electronic band in music history.

He managed to overcome his personal troubles and was honoured by the MusiCares foundation on Friday (06 May 11) for his work helping fellow former addicts.

The MusiCares Foundation, was established in 1989 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. This is a place for musicians to have a place to turn to in their time of need.

But Gahan admits he has to vet all his friends to avoid slipping in his battle for sobriety.

He tells Reuters, "If you sit in a barber's shop long enough, you're gonna get a f**kin' haircut.

"I don't hang out with people that are getting high because I'm not that strong. It's fun to party and I had a lot of fun, and I kind of used up all my chips in that department."
