Chelly Wright has been honoured with a top award at the 2011 OutMusic Awards, one year after ‘coming out’.

Wright received the Vanguard award on Tuesday, one year after announcing she was a lesbian.

Organisers of the awards claimed she was a leader for LGBT community.

Lesbian rocker Melissa Etheridge received the Lifetime Achievement plaque, while gay rights activist Cyndi Lauper was named Person of the Year at the event, held at New York City's Irving Plaza.
