Catherine Deneuve has taken aim at her country's First Lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, for speaking out in defense of an Iranian woman facing a death sentence - branding her appeal counterproductive.
The French president’s wife signed an open letter in support of Sakineh Ashtiani, a mom-of-two who was due to be stoned to death over alleged adultery.
Her support for Ashtiani infuriated editors of leading Iranian newspaper, Kayhan, who branded Bruni-Sarkozy a "prostitute" who "deserves to die".
And Belle de Jour star Deneuve insists the former model should not have intervened, given reports of her previous relationships with high-profile men with long-term partners.
Deneuve says, "When you are a famous person you need to be more cautious when you lend your support to causes - with her past, she should have been more careful.
"It can be a double-edged sword. The other side just took the ball on the bounce. Their hint at her private life was as if to say, 'Mind your own business.'"
