W.E. is a beautifully crafted, passionate tale charting one of the greatest royal love stories of the modern age; the enduring relationship between twice divorced American Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough, Brighton Rock, Made in Dagenham) and King Edward VIII, (James D’Arcy, Master and Commander and the forthcoming Hitchcock) and the toll taken on Wallis as she comprehends the magnitude of the sacrifice that has been made for her.
Viewed through the eyes of a modern day New Yorker, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish, Sucker Punch, Somersault) W.E begins in 1998, and Manhattan is abuzz with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
But the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally, trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage.
Transfixed by the exquisite artefacts of the Windsors' lives, she becomes obsessed with their love story and in particular the chic, charismatic Wallis and what it took to capture the heart of a King.
As she learns more about what Wallis gave up in choosing to be with Edward, Wally in turn starts to find the courage to follow her own heart and create her own happiness.
