At last, the waiting is over: Monte Hellman’s cult masterpiece Two Lane Blacktop races on to DVD debut courtesy of Universal Pictures. Unavailable on any format for many years due to disputes over music rights, the coolest road movie around makes its long-awaited DVD debut and will be available on 18 June 2007. Starring the Beach Boys’ tragic drummer Dennis Wilson in his only major screen role, alongside non-actors such as singer James Taylor and photographer Laurie Bird with character star Warren Oates as the hip roadsters, Hellman’s film is one of the finest films of the 70s and the cult movie to end all cult movies.The film ranks alongside the likes of Easy Rider and Vanishing Point as a counterculture road movie; its plot – about a road race along Route 66 – inspired the real-life Cannonball Run that in itself became a movie phenomenon. Its unavailability has created a huge black market among film collectors, with original VHS copies changing hands for a small fortune.
