Whilst recovering at home from a severe injury he sustained whilst in combat in Iraq, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster - X-Men: The Last Stand) is reluctantly posted to the forces’ Casualty Notification Office, whose heart-rendering job it is to inform families that their relatives have died in combat.
With a sterling cast including Oscar nominated Woody Harrelson (No Country For Old Men) as Captain Tony Stone and Golden Globe winner Steve Buscemi (The Big Lebowski) as grieving father Dale Martin, this Academy Award nominated drama highlights the often ignored aftermath of war and the devastating effect it has not only on the soldiers but also on the families left behind.
Montgomery has more than a few reservations about his new posting. Untrained in counseling or grief management, and unprepared for the new but equally traumatic aspects of his new role, his mentor comes in the unlikely form of Captain Tony Stone, a career soldier and recovering alcoholic.
Struggling at first to communicate, the two quickly form a strong bond over their shared war-torn past and the emotional stress of their job.
The futility of the war is never far from their thoughts as they repeatedly deliver devastating news whilst attempting to adjust back to civilian life themselves.
When he is required to visit the home of Olivia Pitterson (Samantha Morton - Synecdoche New York) a woman whose husband has been killed in action, Montgomery finds himself drawn to her strength and faces an ethical dilemma of whether to get close to a woman in such a vulnerable position.
