Experience the royal treatment in your own home, as critically acclaimed Shakespearean drama, The Hollow Crown is released on DVD, from 1 October 2012, courtesy of Universal.
The Hollow Crown re-imagines the classic tetralogy of William Shakespeare’s spell-binding plays; Richard II, Henry IV parts I & 2 and Henry V exploring themes of succession, power, corruption and greed in a singular sweeping production.
The stellar cast includes, the Kings, played by Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston, who are supported by some of the best Shakespearean actors of our time, including Rory Kinnear, Patrick Stewart, David Suchet, David Morrissey, Simon Russell Beale, Julie Walters, Maxine Peake, John Hurt, Anton Lesser and Paterson Joseph plus lots more.
The Hollow Crown is a tale of family, politics and power. The films chart the rise and fall of three Kings and how their destiny shaped our history. Richard II is a vain, self-indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people’s welfare.
He is ultimately overthrown by his cousin Bolingbroke, who ascends the throne as Henry IV. Henry IV’s reign is marred by his own guilt over Richard’s death, civil war and the fear that his son Hal is a total spendthrift.
When Hal comes to the throne as Henry V, he is left to bury the ghosts of his father’s past whilst fighting his own demons, illustrating the murderous backdrop behind our own history.
Directed by Rupert Goold, Richard Eyre and Thea Sharrock, The Hollow Crown is bursting with exquisite language, high drama, politics and comedy.
The ambitious project was produced by Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes for Neal Street Productions and Gareth Neame for NBCUniversal and David Horn for Thirteen/WNET. It was shown on BBC Two this Summer, as part of the BBC’s contribution to the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival.
Receiving widespread critical praise in the national press, The Times stated 'there was not a performance, a location or a shot, not to relish.'
Don’t miss your chance to own the jewel in the crown of British drama. The Hollow Crown is available on DVD from 1 October 2012.
