Starring: Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, Verónica Echegui
Director: Mabrouk El Mechri
Rating: 2/5
Henry Cavill is going to see his star rocket next year when he takes over the role of Clark Kent in The Man Of Steel as Superman finally returns to this big screen.
Sadly he has exactly covered himself in glory by taking on the role of Will in The Cold Light Of Day - not that any of it is his fault of course.
Will Shaw (Cavill) goes to Spain for a weeklong sailing vacation with his family but his whole world turns upside down when the family is kidnapped by intelligence agents hell-bent on recovering a mysterious briefcase and Will suddenly finds himself on the run.
There is no doubt that Cavill is great in this action genre but other than running around waving a gun he is given little else to do.
The action scenes are ok but they are not re-inventing the wheel here and director Mabrouk El Mechri produces the same old thing rather than trying something new.
The main issue with this movie is a lack of suspense and tension and you can guess what will happen next all the way through the movie - that tends not to leave the audience on the edge of their seat in anticipation.
The beginning of the movie saw real tension between Will and his father (played by Bruce Willis) and this could have been an interesting angle for the movie to pursue - but sadly it nips the most interesting element in the bud pretty early, which is a shame.
I wouldn't go as far to call this movie a catastrophe but fans of this genre will be left severely disappointed at the lack of excitement that it creates.
Merchri had assembled a fantastic cast and this had the potential to be a really great movie and he just seems to have blown in.
The Cold Light Of Day is a routine action movie that offers very little in way of suspense and high octane action and really does see a very talented cast go to waste - shame!
