Naomie Harris (Best Actress - RTS Awards) is Hortense Joseph, raised in Jamaica by the family of charismatic Michael (Ashley Walters), she is an intelligent and ambitious woman who desires more after Michael leaves to join the air force in England.
In 1948 Hortense marries British war veteran Gilbert Joseph (David Oyelowo), hoping that London will offer her more opportunities as well as a chance to be reunited with the love of her life Michael.
However, as Hortense and Gilbert discover, prejudice is now rife for black people and they face an uphill battle to prove themselves.
Along the way they befriend the brave Queenie, a liberal landlady that has seen her fair share of heartache and disappointment. Queenie’s husband Bernard has been missing since the war and like Hortense she married for convenience.
Queenie used to take in soldiers and unbeknown to Hortense this included Michael. The tension increases when it is revealed that both women are in love with him, Queenie discovers that she is pregnant and Bernard returns!
