A massive hit on its original release in 1959, Room at the Top Special Edition will be available to buy on DVD from January 26th 2009.
Heralded as one of the original British âkitchen sink dramasâ, the double Oscar winner marked a bold step in English movie-making with its close examination of class and sexual relationships.
Directed by Jack Clayton (The Great Gatsby), the story follows the character of Joe Lampton who is torn between two women. The working-class man pursues Susan, a wealthier woman than himself, against the wishes of her father. He later falls in love with Alice, a slightly older but unhappily married French woman.
Susan becomes pregnant forcing Joe to choose between these two women and their two opposing worlds, and his affair is no longer a secret.
Groundbreaking for the time, the film based on the novel by John Braine, explores issues of boundaries in small-town Sixties England.
Winning Oscars for Best Actress (Simone Signoret) and Best Screenplay, the film boasts extra special features from the original film including an audio commentary from film historian Neil Sinyard as well as Jack Claytonâs press cuttings scrapbook.
The film will be release by Network in January. CERT: 12. RRP: £14. 99
