Starring: Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti
Director: Adam Shankman
Rating: 2.5/5
Adam Shankman grabbed everyone's attention back in 2007 when he directed musical Hairspray and now he is back with Rock Of Ages.
Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams.
There is not doubt that Rock of Ages has a fantastic energy not to mention a really great soundtrack but the main problem is it lacks any real storyline or plot.
Sadly the film just bounces around from one great musical number to the next without any real thought of story of character development.
There is just such an underdeveloped feel to the movie - which is a real shame because this had promise to be an absolute corker.
The real highlight of the movie is the performance from Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx - he really does just steal the show.
It is a hilarious and over the top performance from the actor as the drugged up and over sexed Jaxx.
However the script doesn't really take full advantage of the performance or the character that Cruise developed and you really do feel that he is wasted - even is he is the film's saving grace.
There are some larger than life actors on the cast list including Russell Brand and Alex Baldwin but they are never really pushed to be anything but slightly exaggerated versions of themselves.
Rock Of Ages really is a movie that was all about the music and built around the musical interludes rather than developing a story and characters to go along with it.
And while you may be able to have a good sing-a-long to the film you are left not really caring about any of the characters of rooting for anyone to succeed.
Rock of Ages is by no means the worst movie that I have seen all year but it was a disappointment - particularly when you consider the type of movie that it could have been.
