Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd), brilliantly brings to life John Dillinger, the enigmatic, charming and ruthless gangster that became a folk hero in a time of financial hardship.
Alongside him, Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Terminator Salvation) plays FBI agent Melvin Purvis, the one man the American Government believe can bring Dillinger to justice. In 1930’s Chicago, times are hard.
Unemployment is rife and the people are poverty stricken. At a time when the American public widely blamed greedy American banks for the financial disarray the country was in, Dillinger became a figurehead for the public’s anger towards the system.
A string of violent and intense shoot outs, car chases and blatant taunting of the establishment made the people of Chicago revel in his bold and audacious bank raids which were planned to perfection and carried out with ruthless efficiency.
Behind Dillinger, he assembled a gang of villains, whose varying criminal expertise formed a criminal dream team, leading the police on a dangerous cat and mouse chase. His gang included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi) and Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum) who together, brought a reign of terror over the Chicago banks.
To the annoyance of the police and FBI, Dillingerwas able to live freely amongst the people of Chicago and whilst doing so met his long term love interest Billie Frechete (Marion Cotillard).
The newly established FBI, are under intense pressure to bring Dillinger to justice and saw his capture as a major feather in their cap. Purvis along with a carefully selected team, begin to close the loop on Dillinger and his gang.
As they begin to pick off his gang one by one, the loyalties of his closest allies are tested to the limit. Will Dillinger fall victim to the ultimate act of betrayal?
